Caxton Press

When the Canterbury earthquakes devastated the region in 2010 and 2011, The Caxton Press’s building sustained considerable damage. The business was kept running throughout, despite being locked out in the CBD ‘red zone’ for 10 weeks.

The quake damage prompted a desire to relocate and build Caxton’s base bigger and better than before. The new building which The Caxton Press now occupies was designed by Trengrove Architects and built by Hanham & Philp Contractors.

The brief requested high amounts of natural light with solar control. The staff needed to be able to block direct light and glare from the offices.

The buildings design and use of vertical louvres allow privacy to its occupants as well as allowing a large field of view through the large windows out between the blades. The office spaces feel light, open and spacious thanks to the abundance of glazed walls.
