Creative minds need creative areas. Home to 50 scientists, this new $7.5 million research facility designed by local architectural firm Jerram Tocker Barron will allow these scientists to study and analyse the marine environment and help improve the technology used within the fishing industry.
Natural light was one of the main design criteria, which was achieved with two 7 metre high curtain walls using APL 150mm flushglaze. This continued with the use of APL skylights with natural ventilation achieved via high level foyer louvres and automated opening sashes. Thermal efficiency was not neglected with thermally efficient double glazed glass with argon gas used throughout.
Environmentally conscious, the majority of the massive LVL cross columns and Xlam walls have been sourced locally and allows open plan offices and collective focal points. The challenging coastal environment required robust duratec aluminium joinery.
The cultural significance of this building has been acknowledged with a local iwi design, proudly displayed within the entrance to the dramatic spacious foyer.
This is a real showcase for Altherm Window Systems with the perfect blend of history and tradition with 21st Century science.
