Shed 4, a $1.2m development by the Tasman District Council around the Mapua waterfront, won Design Windows Nelson a commercial category award in the Window Association of New Zealand annual competition in 2016.
Shed 4 is comprised of seven retailers, as diverse as a coffee roaster, furniture dealer and bicycle hire shop. Thousands of visitors poured into the wharf precinct at the mouth of the Waimea estuary during the summer holidays, putting the seal on the location’s reputation as one of the major tourist hubs in the Nelson Marlborough region.
The Shed 4 development was designed by Gowans Walters & Associates, of Richmond, with a roofline that referenced the rolling waves of the sea and projects a wide, full length eave for shade and weather protection.
Specially detailed products from the Altherm product range were used in New Denim Blue powder coat to fit in with the blue corrugated iron and natural Cedar cladding of the building. Duratec aluminium was chosen for its durability against sea spray ensuring the aluminium joinery will look good for many years to come. Windows and doors drawn from commercial shopfront profiles, the Magnum door range and 40mm window series were among the products used. Convenient and unobtrusive public access is everything for such a commercial enterprise, which denoted parliament hinges, layback bi-fold doors and fully opening sliding panel doors. Entry door access was designed to ensure a flush floor level for visitors entering the building’s retail outlets.
The builder was Gibbons Construction Ltd, of Nelson.
