Nelson Public Toilet

The land of this unique and functional toilet block was bestowed to the council from the prominent Cock families Charitable Trust. Situated at the bottom of the Nelson Cathedral steps, it needed to fit in with the Victorian heritage of the area. The two separate lavatories required a single aluminium unit comprised of two hinged doors large enough for wheel chair access and three fixed panels. An intricate stainless steel overlay provides privacy and transforms a relatively mundane utility building into a talking point for both locals and visitors. Upon entry, an overhead canopy offers relief from the elements while the APL flushglaze suite provides longevity for a well used public facility.

Ebony coloured aluminium was chosen to match the exterior paintwork and create a real contrast to the stainless steel overlay. Due to the size of the unit, the stainless steel overlay and hardware required together with the general complexity of the project, much of the work was completed on site.
