WGANZ 2025 Finalist. Design Awards – Commercial – South Island
Set within a 36,000-acre working sheep station in the Craigieburn Valley, Flockhill has entered a bold new era with the addition of its new restaurant, Sugarloaf as well as seven new luxury villas—ushering in a refined standard of luxury accommodation and hospitality. Opened in December 2024, Sugarloaf is an architectural statement that blends seamlessly with the station’s rugged identity. Guests and visitors arrive through 3m-tall aged-copper doors and are immediately greeted by sweeping views framed by cathedral-style, seven-metre-high ceilings. Hierarchy Group said ”The desire to maximise breathtaking views dictated extensive floor-to-ceiling glazing, particularly on the north-west face. To avoid excessive heat gain, large eaves were introduced, as well as double glazing and underfloor heating throughout”. Sugarloaf transcends the notion of a building; it honours Flockhill’s natural and cultural heritage, offering an elegant, immersive experience that harmonises with the high country’s dramatic terrain.
