Thirsty Acres, Kirwee

Built by Christchurch company Strongline Projects and designed by Foley Group Architect Limited Thirsty Acres is now open on the old Kirwee Tavern site more than three years after the historic 100-year-old watering hole burnt down on Christmas Day in 2019.

Owner Jono Alve wanted to give the venue a totally new name to go with its completely new spectacular look.

The new building “looks spectacular, because it doesn’t look like a pub that’s just sprung up five minutes ago”. Part of the secret to the exterior’s aged look was the cladding. The weatherboards are 200-year-old European oak imported from Austria” Jono Said. “The Aluminium framed windows and doors are a significant element Architecturally and functionally for the tavern, and as such, the ‘fine details’ matter. A thorough shop drawing and review process ensured the windows and doors were able to be made accurately and efficiently so that they windows and doors were seamlessly incorporated to the
building envelope.

Strongline Projects congratulate Design Windows West Coast on completing this project to a high standard.” Andrew Burt, Director, Strongline Projects.

Local builder Strongline Projects hired Design Windows West Coast to supply and install aluminium joinery.

Altherm Commercial Metro Series 125m Flushglazed was used in Standstone Grey. As the windows drawn were large the 125 commercial flushglaze was selected due to the ability to span and meet the design requirements.

The large Metro slider used to divide the indoor restaurant space from the outdoor space opens up wide to maximise the indoor-outdoor flow necessary for providing customers with a leisurely entertainment experience.

Everyone worked well together as a team and this was another great experience with Strongline Projects and their clients.
