Wingatui Road House, Dunedin

The owners of this house had envisioned an expansive house which makes the most of both the indoor and outdoor living areas nestled in a private rural setting. Balancing light and privacy would be key to making this project a success.

O’Neil Architecture have come up with a stunning design. The house is grounded with the use of the schist stone feature, while the roof has the impression of floating as it is separated from the walls with high level windows. These windows have the ceiling and soffit flow seamlessly into them and help with this effect. Both low- and high-level windows are also opening to allow cross ventilation and help control inside temperature.

Metro Thermal Heart frames and premium low-E double glazing is specified to achieve the highest energy rating. This window frame and Flaxpod colour also compliments the features of schist and plaster cladding. A feature oversized pivoting Plasma entry door with custom pull handles welcome guests to the house.

Working with a great local builder like Noel Barclay helps to make a complex job more streamline. While the balanced symmetry looks simple, it needed great care to make the complex window shapes work. As these were fitting in between, up over and around different claddings. This has all come together to make some great features. Attention to detail had to be followed here to create the line your eye follows with these seamless transitions.

The transition from wall to window to roof is a very satisfying balanced look. With everything complete, the complexities all now look a lot simpler which is a credit to the work the architect has put in at the start. The building fits into the landscape and its surroundings nicely.
